Committee Chair Message
I would like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to our chapter for our past performance in supporting the March of Dimes campaign.
Across the country, millions of people walk and raise money for the March of Dimes for so many different reasons:
To celebrate the miracle of a healthy and happy baby
To honor a little fighter that has grown into a healthy child
To show appreciation for the support March of Dimes offers to the mothers of premature babies
Or to remember a baby that didn’t survive the battle
No matter the reason, each of us has been touched by someone who has been impacted by the work of the March of Dimes and I’m happy to have your support.
You may be asking yourself why we are focused on the March of Dimes as one of our community outreach efforts. The statistics below indicate this is a serious problem:
Every 8 seconds, a baby is born in the U.S., and every hour, three of these babies die.
On the average day in the U.S., 78 babies die before reaching their first birthday.
African –American babies are nearly twice as likely to die before their first birthday.
Every 4 ½ minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect.
Every year, more than 4,900 babies are born weighing less than 1 pound, and every 1 ½ minutes a baby weighing less than 5 ½ pounds is born.
As a global organization, it makes good sense to support the March of Dimes as we make a difference in our communities. The IUL chapter has been one of the top fundraising teams in Montgomery County ranking within the top five for the past 5 years.
Right now, babies need all the help they can get. Premature birth affects about 380,000 babies here in the United States. I’m walking in March for Babies to get the message out about this terrible problem and you can help.
As chairman of the March of Dimes committee I want to thank you for your continuing support and together we can remain one of the top fundraising teams once again.
Yours in Service,
French Pope, Jr., Chairman
