History of the Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr. Scholarship Breakfast

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast has been an annual event since 1977. This signature fundraising event honors the life and legacy of Dr. King; while raising funds for the Paul Robeson Scholarships awarded each year to deserving students that meet our “need” and “merit” based criteria.

Every year, we, The Monument Chapter (IUL)  partners, with the Alpha Scholarship & Charitable Foundation (ASCF), to raise scholarship funds.  ASCF is the 501(c)(3) arm of IUL and the Paul Roberson Scholarship  collaboration began in 2002, with the mission of our Fraternity in mind. “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities”

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast is held in January on the Monday that has been reserved as a Federal Holiday to honor Dr. King, our Alpha brother.

Presently, our MLK Scholarship Breakfast is held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center located in Rockville, Maryland. Typically, more than 900 people attend this celebration, including a who’s who of Maryland’s elected officials and community leaders.

 Past MLK Breakfast speakers include:

  • U.S. Representative John Lewis

  • U.S. Representative Chris Van Hollen (now a U.S. Senator)

  • Former Maryland Lt. Governors Kathleen Kennedy Townsend & Anthony Brown (now Maryland Attorney General)

  • National Urban League President Bro. Mark Morial

  • Former County Executive of Montgomery County, Bro. Isiah “Ike” Leggett

  • Bro. Bishop W. Darin Moore, Chair of the National Council of Churches Chairman and a Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church

  • Rev. Haywood A. Robinson, III, Pastor of the People’s Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD

  • U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin, Maryland’s 8th Congressional District

And this year, we will hear from the Current General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Bro. Dr. Willis Lonzer.

We hope to see you in January for this Annual Momental Celebratory Experience!
